Random Thoughts from the Home of Golf
The golf world will miss the greatness and genius that was Seve Ballesteros. He won the Open Championship three times, twice at Royal Lytham & St Annes and once on the Old Course in 1984. Our favorite quote of Seve’s is indicative of his warmth, humour and ability to not take things too seriously. When asked about four putting the 16th green at the 1990 Masters, Seve memorably replied, “I miss, I miss, I miss, I make.” RIP Severiano Ballesteros.
At the risk of jeopardizing our good fortune, thus far we have experienced a glorious spring here in St Andrews. If you don’t believe us, see for yourself. This link is for a live webcam overlooking the Old Course. Click here. We always tell people to join us in March, April and May – perhaps this could confirm that advice.
More and more of our guests are road tripping it from Monarchs House to Castle Stuart, the Highland’s links course that opened in 2009. Everyone returns with the news that Castle Stuart is one of the finest courses that they have ever seen. This year the course is host to the Scottish Open played the week before the Open Championship. It’s not often that such a prestigious event is played on a young/new course but there’s good reason for it. Read more about this golf gem here.
Speaking of Highland golf, while it’s not our business to editorialize, we must admit to watching Donald Trump’s attempt at building a golf course & hotel/resort in Aberdeenshire with great interest (and amusement) . Some locals and environmentalists have firmly planted a flag in the ground against the project. Their cause has been taken up by an independent filmmaker who has produced the movie, “You’ve been Trumped.” We include the trailer here. Tell us what you think of this story.
Finally, consider a trip to St Andrews this summer. Monarchs House has some availability in July and August and we would love to welcome you to St Andrews whether this is your first trip or your 100th.
